Welcome to the heart of Sikh spirituality in Wellington, New Zealand – Wellington Sikh Sangat. We are a vibrant and welcoming community dedicated tp upholding the core values of Sikhism while serving our wider local community. A Gurudwara, or Sikh place of worship, is a place of spirituality, learning, and charitable service where people from all walks of life come together to practice and share the teachings of Sikhism – Naam Japna, Vand Chakna, and Kirt Karni.

The core principles of Sikhism

Sikhism, founded by Guru Nanak Dev Ji in the 15th century, is a religion that emphasizes the following core principles:

Ek Onkar (one Creator)

Sikhism believes in the existence of one God who is the creator and sustainer of all life.in the universe.

Sarbat da bhala (equality)

Sikhs believe in the equality of all humans, regardless of their caste, creed, or gender. This includes equality for women and women empowerment.

Seva (selfless service)

Serving humanity and helping those in need is at the core of Sikhism.

Three pillars of sikhism

Naam japna (meditation)

The first pillar of Sikhism is the practice of ‘Naam Japna’ which involves the continuous remembrance and meditation on the divine name, especially through the recitation of the sacred mantra Waheguru.

Kirat karni (honest Living)

Kirat Karni (Honest and Diligent Work): The second pillar, “Kirat Karni,” emphasizes the importance of honest and diligent labor. This principle promotes a strong work ethic, integrity, and the idea that one should earn an honest living through fair means while avoiding exploitation.

Vand chakna (sharing with others)

The third pillar, ‘vand chakna’, centers on the concept of selfless service. Sikhs are encouraged to engage in acts of charity, seva (selfless service), and community service. This includes providing food and shelter to anyone in need, regardless of their beliefs.

Our Services
